The Nation of Israel (Print)

This work is about the Nation of Israel and what that may be, hopefully posing questions and answers. The structure stands surrealistically on a map of Jerusalem. The head is a portrait of David, the imperfect Christ figure who was acting King of Israel. The crown on his head resembles ancient Jerusalem, alluding to our future home in glory. The beard protrudes from his face, tumbling down as if a mountain, and within that mountain of beard there resides a fox hole and nests for birds, for “even foxes have dens and birds have nests, but not even the Son of Man has a place to rest his head.” (Matt. 8:20) When the beard comes to an end it becomes a tent, reminiscent of the Nations impermanent tent culture, and it’s pastoral roots symbolized by the shepherds canes as tent poles. The Sheep graze in the beard in threes, the number of the trinity as God’s people, but the goats reside under the tent symbolic of being grafted into the vine.

This artwork seeks to examine the ideas of who God’s people are and the mysterious nature of the Nation of Israel, taking the point of view that it is at the same time a historical place, a spiritual reality, and a future hope for all God’s people.
